How to fix Neo4j Aura not working
Neo4j Aura is the managed cloud service for the Neo4j graph database. Developers and data teams create databases, connect applications and run queries through the console and APIs. Find your symptom below. Most problems come from a sign-in, a connection string or network rule, a query, a provisioning step, or the service itself. Never post connection strings with passwords in a support message.
Jump to what you are seeing
- Connection Failed
- Console Unavailable
- Login Failed
- API Error
- Slow Performance
- Provisioning Failed
- Query Errors
Connection Failed
Your application cannot reach the database. A wrong connection string or a network rule is the usual cause.
- Check the connection string and password are current.
- Check your IP address is allowed by the instance's network settings.
- Test from a second network to tell a client problem from a network problem.
- Check the instance shows as running in the console.
Login Failed
Sign-in to the console is refused. Check you are using the account your team set up.
- If the message says the password is wrong, reset it and check spam.
- Check two-factor authentication. If your phone has changed, ask your project owner to reset it.
- Try a private window to rule out an old session.
API Error
Calls to the Aura API fail or return an error.
- Check the status code. A 401 or 403 means the credentials are wrong or lack permission, a 429 means too many calls, and a 5xx means a platform-side problem.
- Confirm the credentials have not been revoked, and that they are for the right project.
- Retry with a growing delay.
Slow Performance
Queries are slow, often for large graph traversals without a limit.
- Check the query's plan and look for a step that scans far more data than it needs.
- Add a limit or a narrower match where the query allows it.
- Check the instance has enough memory for its workload.
Provisioning Failed
A new database instance does not start, or it stays in a setting-up state.
- Read the error in the console. It usually names the region, the size or a quota.
- Check the region and size you chose are available for your account.
- Check your project limit for instances, and ask your project owner to raise it if needed.
Query Errors
A query returns an error, such as a syntax or a missing label error.
- Read the error. It normally names the line and the label or property that is wrong.
- Check the spelling of labels and properties, since graph names are case-sensitive.
- Run the query on a test instance before changing a production query.
Still not working?
If it still does not work, contact your Aura project owner first, since they manage instances, users and network access. For a platform-wide problem, contact Neo4j support through the help option in the console or on neo4j.io. Have your project name, the instance name, the exact error text, and the time it started with your time zone. Never send passwords, connection strings or API keys in a support message. Live incident updates are on status.neo4j.io.
Most database problems come from a network rule, a connection string or a slow query, and they usually clear once that one item is corrected. The status page shows live platform incidents, so you can see whether the problem is on Neo4j's side.
