Rough guide, not a measurement: each description is written automatically from the site’s technology stack and the site has not confirmed it. A site is counted once, in the first group its description fits (shop, help and docs, blog, marketing site; otherwise the whole site). Descriptions that only guess (“likely”, “may”) are left out.

Operated by

Twilio Inc.[9]

Twilio's place of business is in San Francisco, California · since 2011[9][10]

Its story

  1. 2011

Segment began as Segment.io, a classroom lecture tool by MIT roommates who joined Y Combinator. The classroom product failed and pushed the team toward the analytics library that became its core.[10]

  2. 2012

In December the team open-sourced its JavaScript library, analytics.js. One piece of code let developers send data to dozens of analytics services, and interest grew fast.[10]

  3. 2013

Segment.io launched in January as a hosted analytics API built on analytics.js. A single API sent data to many analytics services, and mobile libraries followed in June.[11]

  4. 2020

Twilio completed its acquisition of Segment on November 2. Segment became a division of Twilio, joining customer data to Twilio's communications tools.[12][13]
