How to fix Piano not working
Piano is a digital experience platform for publishers and brands. It runs paywalls, subscriptions, analytics and personalisation on their websites. Editors, marketers and developers use it. Find your symptom below. Most problems come from a sign-in, a site script or tag, a paywall or payment setting, or the platform itself.
Jump to what you are seeing
- Paywall Not Loading
- Dashboard Login Failed
- Analytics Down
- API Error
- Payment Processing Failed
- Composer Not Loading
- Piano ID Error
Paywall Not Loading
The paywall does not appear for readers, or it blocks content that should be free.
- Check the paywall is published and assigned to the right pages and audience.
- Check the Piano script is on the page and loads without errors in the browser console.
- Test in a private window with extensions off, since ad blockers can stop the paywall loading.
- If it fails for every reader, check the status page and send the page address and the time to support.
Dashboard Login Failed
Sign-in to the Piano dashboard is refused.
- If the message says the password is wrong, reset it and check spam.
- Check you are signing in to the account for your organisation.
- Ask your administrator to confirm your user has the right role.
Analytics Down
Analytics pages show no data, or the tracking does not record visits.
- Check the tracking code is on the pages you need.
- Visit a page yourself and check the visit appears in the analytics after a short wait.
- Check the status page for an analytics incident.
API Error
Calls to the Piano API fail or return an error.
- Check the status code. A 401 or 403 means the key or permission is wrong, a 429 means too many calls, and a 5xx means a platform-side problem.
- Confirm the API key has not been changed or revoked.
- Retry with a growing delay, and do not create the same subscriber twice when you retry.
- Check status.piano.io if several calls fail together.
Payment Processing Failed
A subscription payment is declined or does not complete. A bank decision is the usual reason.
- Ask the reader to check the card details and try once more, or to check with their bank.
- Do not ask the reader to pay again until the first attempt has a final status.
- If the failure has no reason shown, send the transaction reference and the time to support.
Composer Not Loading
The Composer, where paywall and campaign designs are built, does not load or does not save.
- Save your work first, then reload the page in a private window.
- Try another browser if the editor stays blank.
- If saving fails, copy your text somewhere safe and send the campaign name and the time to support.
Piano ID Error
The reader sign-in, Piano ID, shows an error or does not sign the reader in.
- Check the reader is using the sign-in method the publisher offers.
- Clear the site data for that publication, then try again in a private window.
- If it still fails, send the publication name and the time to support, not the reader's details.
Still not working?
If it still does not work, contact your Piano administrator first, since they manage the site settings. For a platform-wide problem, contact Piano support through the help option in the dashboard or on piano.io. Have your site or publication name, the page address, the exact error text, and the time it started with your time zone. Do not send readers' personal details in a support message. Live incident updates are on status.piano.io.
Most paywall and analytics problems come from a script, a setting or an ad blocker, and they usually clear once that is checked. The status page shows live platform incidents, so you can see whether the problem is on Piano's side.
