About Paystack & Technical Insights
What this service does and the technologies behind it.
Read the tech stack as text▾
Overview: A deliberately lean, Cloudflare-protected payments stack that hides application complexity behind edge security and bot management.
What stands out
- The visible stack is intentionally minimal, exposing only Cloudflare and HSTS, which reduces attack surface for a high-risk payments business.
- No signature application technologies are detectable, suggesting Paystack heavily relies on Cloudflare's edge services rather than exposing app frameworks.
Technologies paystack.com uses
- Cloudflare — Delivers global edge caching and DDoS defense for reliable payment processing.
- Cloudflare Bot Management — Protects Paystack's payment APIs and merchant dashboards from credential stuffing, carding, and scraping, preserving high transaction success rates.
- HSTS — Enforces HTTPS to keep payment data encrypted in transit.
How these technologies work together
- Cloudflare runs on Cloudflare Bot Management — Bot Management runs as a service on Cloudflare's edge, inspecting traffic before it reaches Paystack's origin infrastructure.
- Cloudflare works alongside HSTS — Cloudflare serves the HSTS header at the edge, enforcing browser-level HTTPS for all Paystack requests.

How to fix Paystack not working
Paystack helps businesses in Africa take payments by card, bank transfer, mobile money and USSD, and send money to bank accounts. Merchants work in its dashboard, through its APIs and on its payment pages. Find your symptom below. A failed payment affects a real customer, so check the status of a payment before you retry it.
Jump to what you are seeing
Website
The Paystack website or dashboard does not load for you.
- Open the page in a private window and on another network.
- Check status.paystack.com for an active incident.
- If your checkout still takes payments while the dashboard is down, check with a small test payment before deciding anything is broken.
API Access
Calls to the Paystack API fail or return an error.
- Check the status code. A 401 or 403 means the secret key is wrong, not allowed, or for the wrong mode. A 429 means too many calls, and a 5xx means a platform-side problem.
- Check you are using the right key. Test keys and live keys are separate.
- Before you retry a charge, check the transaction reference, so a customer is not charged twice.
- Check status.paystack.com if several calls fail together.
Payments
A customer's payment fails, or is left pending.
- Check the transaction status in your dashboard. A pending payment is not yet a failure, so wait for it to update.
- If the bank or card provider declined it, ask the customer to check with them.
- Do not ask the customer to pay again until the first attempt has a final status.
- If a payment stays stuck, send the transaction reference and the time to support.
Bank Transfer
A transfer to a bank account is delayed, fails, or shows a wrong account name.
- Check the account number and bank are entered correctly, and that the account name matches.
- Check the transfer status. Bank processing can take time, especially at weekends or around bank holidays.
- Do not send the transfer again until you have confirmed the first one failed.
- If it failed with no reason shown, send the transfer reference to support.
Mobile Money
A mobile money payment does not complete, because the approval step on the customer's phone did not finish, or the phone number is in the wrong format.
- Ask the customer to check their phone for an approval prompt, and to complete it in time.
- Check the phone number is in the right format for that country and network.
- If the prompt never arrived, ask the customer to try again later rather than you sending many prompts.
- If the payment stays pending for a long time, send the transaction reference and the time to support.
Still not working?
If it still does not work, contact Paystack support through the help option in your dashboard or on paystack.com. Have your business name, the transaction reference, the exact error or response code, the payment method, and the time it happened with your time zone. Never send your secret key or full card numbers in a support message. Live incident updates are on status.paystack.com.
Most payment problems come from a decline, a key mode or a pending status, and they usually clear once that is checked. The status page shows live platform incidents, so you can see whether the problem is on Paystack's side.
