Status updated
Equinix Metal was a bare metal as a service offering from Equinix, the global data center and interconnection company, built on the former Packet platform. It let developers provision dedicated physical servers on demand via API in Equinix data centers around the world, with direct access to Equinix Fabric for private interconnection to clouds, networks and partners. Equinix Metal supported infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform and was used for low-latency, high-performance and hybrid cloud workloads. Equinix announced in 2024 that the service would be retired in 2026.

Overview: A developer-centric bare-metal infrastructure site built as a Docusaurus-static documentation hub, fronted by Akamai's performance and security edge.
What stands out
- The rare use of Docusaurus (under 0.5% of sites) indicates a docs-led strategy to acquire and retain developer customers.
- Layering Akamai mPulse, Bot Manager, and CDN shows heavy investment in edge performance and automated threat defense.
- Using AWS origin behind Akamai edge suggests a two-tier architecture optimized for global reach and resilience.
Technologies equinixmetal.com uses
- Akamai Bot Manager — Akamai Bot Manager protects the site from scraping and credential abuse, important for a paid infrastructure API.
- Tailwind CSS — Tailwind CSS styles a custom Docusaurus theme, enabling rapid UI iteration and consistent branding without heavy CSS overhead.
- Akamai — Akamai CDN and WAF accelerate global delivery and absorb attacks, essential for a high-availability infrastructure brand.
- React — Powers interactive Docusaurus components.
- Amazon Web Services — AWS hosts the web origin.
- Akamai mPulse — Akamai mPulse monitors real user performance, indicating they optimize the docs site's speed for a technical, impatient audience.
- Boomerang — Boomerang powers Akamai mPulse's RUM data collection, capturing page load timings from actual visitor browsers.
- Docusaurus — Uses Docusaurus to publish developer docs and product guides; signals a docs-led developer experience for a bare-metal API platform.
- Google Analytics — Tracks marketing and documentation usage.
- Webpack — Bundles JavaScript for the Docusaurus build.
- DigiCert — DigiCert issues the site's SSL/TLS certificate, assuring visitors of secure connections when evaluating infrastructure services.
- HSTS — Enforces HTTPS-only connections.
- Open Graph — Enables rich social sharing previews.
- Google Tag Manager — Manages analytics and marketing tags.
- HTTP/3 — Serves assets over HTTP/3 for faster, modern performance.
How these technologies work together
- Docusaurus requires React — Docusaurus is built on React, so the site's interactive documentation experience relies entirely on React components.
- Akamai mPulse requires Boomerang — Akamai mPulse relies on the Boomerang JavaScript library to collect timing metrics from real browser sessions.
- Docusaurus integrates with Tailwind CSS — Tailwind CSS is integrated into the Docusaurus theme, letting developers style documentation quickly with utility classes.
- Docusaurus requires Webpack — Docusaurus uses webpack to bundle React and Markdown content into the static site served to visitors.
- Akamai integrates with Amazon Web Services — AWS hosts the web origin behind Akamai's CDN, combining cloud compute with edge delivery.
- Akamai runs on Akamai mPulse — mPulse runs on Akamai's platform, using its edge network to collect and report performance telemetry.
- Akamai runs on Akamai Bot Manager — Bot Manager is deployed on Akamai's edge, inspecting traffic before it reaches the origin to block automated threats.
- Akamai integrates with DigiCert — DigiCert certificates are served by Akamai's edge servers, ensuring HTTPS termination occurs close to global users.
- DigiCert integrates with HSTS — DigiCert's TLS certificate establishes the HTTPS connection that HSTS forces browsers to keep using.
- Docusaurus integrates with Open Graph — Docusaurus generates Open Graph meta tags for each docs page, improving link previews and organic sharing.
- Docusaurus integrates with Google Analytics — Docusaurus has a Google Analytics plugin, allowing the team to track which documentation pages drive signups.
- Docusaurus integrates with Google Tag Manager — Docusaurus can inject a Google Tag Manager container, centralizing marketing tags across documentation pages.
- Akamai runs on HTTP/3 — Akamai's edge supports HTTP/3, enabling faster multiplexed connections for the static Docusaurus site.

How to fix Equinix Metal not working
Equinix Metal provided dedicated bare metal servers that could be ordered through an API. Equinix announced that the service would be retired in 2026. If you still rely on it, the steps below help you check the basics, but the most important step is to confirm your migration plan with your Equinix account team.

- Console Down
- API Error
- Server Connectivity
- Provisioning Failed
- Network Latency
- BGP Issues
- Metadata Service
- Login Failed
Console Down
The Equinix Metal portal does not load, or it shows an error.
- Open the portal in a private window and on another network.
- Check status.equinixmetal.com for an active incident.
- If the portal stays down, use the API for urgent actions, if it still responds, or contact your account team.
API Error
Calls to the API fail or return an error.
- Check the status code. A 401 or 403 means the token or permission is wrong, a 429 means too many calls, and a 5xx means a platform-side problem.
- Confirm the API token has not been revoked or changed.
- Retry with a growing delay, and check the server's state before you create another one.
- Check status.equinixmetal.com if several calls fail together.
Server Connectivity
A server cannot be reached over the network, or it drops off.
- Check the server shows as running in the portal.
- Check your firewall or security rules allow the traffic you need.
- Use the console for the server, if it is available, to check the network settings on the server.
- If the server is unreachable for no clear reason, send the server ID and the time to support.
Provisioning Failed
A new server does not start, or it stays in a provisioning state.
- Check the facility and plan you selected have capacity. A full location can stop new servers.
- Read the provisioning error in the portal or the API response.
- Try a different facility or plan, and keep the failed server's ID for support.
Network Latency
Traffic between your server and its users or other services is slower than normal.
- Check whether the slowness is on one route or on all routes, using a simple ping test from two locations.
- Check your application's own load and any connection limits first.
- If the slowness is on the provider's side, send the route details and the time to support.
BGP Issues
A BGP session does not come up, or routes are not announced as expected.
- Check the session settings: the peer address, the AS number and the password must match on both sides.
- Check the prefixes you announce are the ones you are allowed to announce.
- Check the session status with your network team, and send the session ID and the time to support if it stays down.
Metadata Service
A server cannot read its metadata, such as its network settings or user data.
- Check the server can reach the metadata address from inside the server.
- Check the server's firewall is not blocking that request.
- Restart the network service on the server, then check the metadata again.
Login Failed
Sign-in is refused. Check you are using your Equinix account and the right project.
- If the message says the password is wrong, reset it and check spam for the email.
- Check you are in the right organisation and project, since servers are listed per project.
- Ask your administrator to confirm your access.
Still not working?
Because this service was announced for retirement in 2026, first confirm its status and your migration plan with your Equinix account team. If it still does not work, contact Equinix support through the help option on the Equinix website. Have your project name, the server or session ID, the exact error text, and the time it started with your time zone. Never send API tokens in a support message. Live incident updates are on status.equinixmetal.com.
Most server problems come from a capacity limit, a network rule or a setting, and they usually clear once that is checked. The status page shows live incidents, so you can see whether the problem is on the provider's side.
