How to fix Buildkite not working

Buildkite is a continuous integration platform. Teams run their own build agents and use Buildkite to build, test and deploy code. Find your symptom below. Most problems come from an agent that is not connected, a pipeline or webhook setting, a sign-in, or the platform itself. Check the agent is connected and the build log before you change a pipeline.

Jump to what you are seeing

Builds Not Starting

Builds are queued and do not begin.

  1. Check at least one agent is connected and free, and that its queue matches the pipeline.
  2. Check the pipeline's trigger and branch settings.
  3. Check www.buildkitestatus.com, and restart the agent once if it is connected but idle.

Website Down

The Buildkite website does not load for you.

  1. Open the page in a private window and on another network.
  2. Check www.buildkitestatus.com for an active incident.
  3. If only your network is affected, ask IT to check the firewall.

Agent Connectivity

Build agents do not connect, or they disconnect during builds.

  1. Check the agent machine has power and a working connection to the internet.
  2. Check the firewall allows the agent to reach Buildkite.
  3. Check www.buildkitestatus.com, then restart the agent and note the time it dropped.

API Issues

Calls to the Buildkite API fail or return an error.

  1. Check the status code. An access error usually means the token is wrong or has expired, too many calls means you should slow down, and a server error means a service-side problem.
  2. Confirm the token has the right scopes and has not been revoked.
  3. Retry with a growing delay, and check www.buildkitestatus.com if several calls fail together.

Login Failed

Sign-in is refused.

  1. If the message says the password is wrong, reset it and check spam.
  2. Check you are using the account that owns the organisation.
  3. Try a private window to rule out an old session.

Webhook Failures

A webhook does not reach the code host or the connected tool.

  1. Check the webhook address is correct and reachable from the internet.
  2. Check the webhook's secret matches on both sides.
  3. Check www.buildkitestatus.com, and redeliver the failed event once the cause is fixed.

Still not working?

Contact your organisation's Buildkite administrator or your engineering lead first, since they manage agents, pipelines and access. For a platform-wide problem, contact Buildkite support through the help option in the app or on the Buildkite website. Have your organisation name, the pipeline and build link, the agent name, the exact error text, and the time with your time zone. Never send tokens, secrets or agent keys in a support message. Live incident updates are on www.buildkitestatus.com.

Most build problems come from an agent that is offline, a pipeline setting or a webhook, and they usually clear once that is checked. The status page shows live incidents, so you can see whether the problem is on Buildkite's side.
